Subjects of protection
The notion of "geographical indication" includes the notions of "appellation of origin" and "indication of origin of goods".
Appellation of origin, which is granted legal protection, is the designation representing or containing a modern or historical, official or unofficial, full or abbreviated name of a geographical object, as well as the designation derived from such a name that has become well-known as a result of its use in relation to a product which special characteristics are exclusively or primarily determined by specific environmental conditions and (or) human factors of that geographical object.
Indication of origin of goods is the designation directly or indirectly indicating the actual origin or place of manufacture of goods. The origin of goods can be represented in the form of the names of geographical objects or pictures (the Eiffel Tower; made in Belarus).
